In volume 1 of the LN there is quite a bit of build up like back story and the class growing stronger and PTSD from the situation thats missed out of the anime and general details overlooked. Its pretty similar the light novel goes a bit more in-depth but for the most part the anime adaption was done really well. Houtarou Oreki is a self-proclaimed energy-saver - that is he will not actively waste energy doing things that arent necessary.
